Lonnie Thompson, Byrd Polar Research Center, Ohio State University
"Global Climate Change: A Paleoclimate Perspective from the World's Highest Mountains"
4:30pm, Filene Auditorium, Moore Hall
Lonnie Thompson, PhD of the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State University
has achieved global recognition for his drilling and analysis of ice
cores from mountain glaciers and ice caps in the tropical and
sub-tropical regions of the world. A high altitude climber and paleoclimatologist
who studies climate change by looking at the entire history of the
Earth, Thompson has spent more time above 18,000 feet than any other
person in the world. As recently as this Fall, he recovered two of the
deepest ice cores every extracted from the Andes (195 and 189 meters).
In 2007, he received the National Medal of Science, the highest honor
the U.S. gives to an American scientist. Read a NY Times article on his research that appeared Nov 3, 2009.
