                                                                        FELLOWSHIPS IN GLOBAL HEALTH  
 
OVERVIEW OF FELLOWSHIPS: The goal of the Dartmouth-Fogarty International (DFI) Fellowships is to train the next generation of global health researchers. These six to twelve week fellowships provide Dartmouth students the opportunity to conduct mentored global health research in a variety of fields and settings.  Eight Fellows are selected in the fall and matched with a global health researcher from Dartmouth Medical School or Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.  These advanced level fellowships are for students who have demonstrated a strong interest in global health issues and the ability to conduct semi-independent research. Fellows will be expected to participate in several educational sessions before heading out for their international research site.  DFI Fellowships are funded, in part, by the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health through the Frameworks in Global Health grant.  This two-year grant will support eight fellowships each year during 2009-2010 and 2010-2011.   QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Students currently enrolled in a graduate degree program or undergraduates in their sophomore year or above.
  • A strong interest in global health issues demonstrated through coursework and/or extracurricular activities.
  • Ability to represent Dartmouth well in a cross-cultural professional work environment.
  • Previous research and international is experience is desirable but not required.
  • Appropriate foreign language skills desirable.
  • For undergraduate applicants, preference will be given to those who have declared an International Studies minor.
  EXPECTATIONS
  • Participate in 6-8 hours of pre-travel orientation to be scheduled January - March.
  • Meet with your faculty advisor 2-3 times prior to departure.
  • Prepare a project outline of activities to be undertaken during your overseas fellowship period.
  • Travel overseas for 6-12 weeks to participate in a collaborative ongoing research project.
  • Prepare a scientific poster and brief presentation of the research activities for the DFI Fellowships event to be held in fall 2010 (for students who will graduate in June 2010, the poster and a one-page summary presentation is required).
  APPLICATION PROCESS & TIMELINE: ALL students (undergraduate sophomores or above, graduate, TDI, and medical students) are eligible to apply.  There are 3 parts to the applications process:

-          the relevance of the internship to your academic & intellectual interests

-          the responsibilities & requirements of the project & your qualifications to fulfill them

-          a description of your personal goals

Two (2) Letters of Recommendation (NOTE: at least one must be from a Faculty member)

Copy of your current academic transcript

  1. INTERVIEW: Finalists will be contacted for an in-person or phone interview with a member of the selection committee.
 
  1. SELECTION: Fellows will be selected and notified by December 1, 2009.
