OVERVIEW
In order to enhance the quality of student research projects, it is sometimes necessary for students to leave Dartmouth in order to conduct their research. It may be that a thesis on US foreign policy would benefit from a research trip to a presidential library in the US, or that an independent study project or thesis on post-colonial art might profit from a trip to the British Museum in London. In order to access resources not available on campus, the Dickey Center has created a grant program to allow students to conduct research for a senior thesis or culminating project, or an independent study. Additionally, students may apply to the Dickey Center for support in order to present a paper or in other ways participate significantly in a scholarly or academically related conference. To be eligible for these grants, students must be currently enrolled in good standing at Dartmouth, and seeking to fund projects for which they will receive
Dartmouth academic credit.
Dickey Undergraduate research awards vary greatly in amount, depending on duration of research trip and location in which the research is being conducted. In all cases, students are asked to provide lowest cost estimates for reliable travel and safe accommodation. The Dickey Center cannot provide funds for the purchase of any equipment, such as computers, cameras or peripherals. Dickey Center awards are grants, and as such are considered taxable income by the IRS. In the case of foreign nationals whose countries of citizenship do not have a tax treaty with the
US , we will when possible make awards that take this into account.
Types of projects for which the Dickey Center offers research funding:
Senior Thesis/culminating experience projects Students writing senior theses may apply for funding to support the research of these projects. In order to be eligible, the senior thesis or culminating project must have been approved by the department in which the student is a major. The criteria used to determine funding includes, but is not limited to the following: Has the student fully availed herself/himself of the resources at Dartmouth? Are the resources the student seeks elsewhere essential to the thesis or project, or would they significantly contribute to enhancing the quality of the project? Has the student done all necessary advance work to prepare for the research trip, such as identifying archives or individuals significant to the project, determining that these resources will be available to them, etc? Does the student have the analytic or language skills necessary to conduct the research? Is the timeline for research reasonable? Applicants should be as precise as possible about the resources being sought.
Independent Study Research In some instances, a student may wish to pursue original research to complement an independent study course. The criteria used to assess the quality of the proposal are similar to those for senior thesis research. Often, however, a student will seek to use a leave term to conduct the research and opt to enroll in the Independent Study in the term following the leave term. In this instance, the student and professor with whom the independent study will be registered must sign a contract indicating when the independent study will be official registered for, and what preliminary work the student must undertake to prepare themselves for the research. Leave term research trips funded by the Dickey Center will be capped at the current international internship level plus reasonable research expenses.
Support for Conference attendance The Dickey Center also provides funding to students to attend conferences in which they are presenting their original work. A copy of the acceptance letter to participate in the conference must accompany the application. We cannot fund students who wish simply to attend a conference in which they are not presenting their work, as the demand is too great and the academic value too variable.
The easiest way to apply is on-line through the DICKEY STUDENT FUNDING organization on Blackboard. All application materials, deadlines, and information can be found & submitted through the Blackboard site: http://blackboard.dartmouth.edu/
APPLICATION DEADLINES:
- Winter 2009 Research: Thursday, October 23rd
- Spring 2009 Research: Thursday, February 5th
- Summer 2009 Research: Thursday, April 30th
- Fall 2009 Research: Saturday, July 25th
There are 3 parts to the Application Process:
If you do not wish to apply through the Blackboard site, please follow the steps below submitting both a hard copy & an electronic copy to the Dickey Center by the appropriate deadline.
STEP 1: Complete the attached PDF form (2 pages) using Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. Click here to download the latest version of Adobe Reader ** DO NOT open the document with Preview **
Undergraduate Research Grant Application F08
STEP 2: In addition to the application form, students should submit a project description that sets forth in detail:
- the relevance of the reseach to your academic & intellectual interests
- the responsibilities & requirements of the project & your qualifications to fulfill them
- a description of your personal goals
Your senior thesis or culminating project description (OR independent study contract & copy of syllabus and course requirements) is also sufficient.
STEP 3: To complete your Undergraduate Research Grant application you will need to submit the recommendation form below. These forms should be completed and submitted to the Dickey Center by the application deadline.
Recommendation Letter
Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects (CPHS) ** Consult with your faculty research mentor to determine whether your project requires review by the Committee on the Protection of Human Subjects ** If your project involves human subjects, you must submit your materials to CPHS at the same time as you submit materials for grant funding.
- If your project involves human subjects, you must submit your materials to CPHS at the same time you submit your application for grant funding (even if you expect that your project will fall in the exempt category for CPHS).
- CPHS has specific guidelines for submitting your materials for approval -- do not simply submit the same materials that you submitted for your grant application. From the CPHS website, click on "student researchers" to access the relevant forms and materials. If you have questions, contact Ann O'Hara via blitz or phone (646-3407).
Further information is available on the CPHS website or by contacting Ann O’Hara via blitzmail or phone (646-3407).
We strongly encourage interested students to contact the Dickey Center directly, as early as possible in the project conceptualizing and development process, in order to discuss project eligibility and application guidelines.
