I am confident that the relevance and vitality of liberal learning, on a contemporary campus, will largely rise or fall on the institution's ability to involve its students, faculty, staff, and alumni in a new kind of mix: 'the practice of liberal learning.

In the spirit of President Dickey's vision of a modern liberal arts education, the Dickey Center develops programs that encourage students to apply the knowledge and skills they are acquiring in the classroom in a variety of international activities, both on and off campus. Current student programs cross curricular and extra-curricular bounds.

In the curricular sphere, the Center seeks to create awareness of, and commitment to, the great international issues of our day. It promotes academically-informed discussions of complex issues and seeks to enhance, inform and enliven the student’s classroom experience. In addition to organizing many public lectures and panel discussions each term, the Center provides opportunities for students to meet directly with visiting international scholars and practitioners. Students can also pursue a minor in War and Peace Studies or tailor a series of internationally-themed courses to obtain an International Studies Certificate. Other opportunities, such as the Undergraduate Research Travel Grants or the Chase Peace Prize, are designed to support student research and recognize academic excellence within the College community.

In the realm of co-curricular activities, the Center acknowledges that a great deal of learning and exploration will also take place outside of the classroom. Taking advantage of the College’s quarterly academic calendar, the Center offers support for students to conduct leave-term international internships to explore possible careers in international fields. On-campus, the Center works closely with student organizations that promote discussion and debate about international issues, and offers modest support for on-campus student events that raise awareness about global concerns.

Postgraduate opportunities include the Richard D. Lombard Public Service Fellowship, which encourages recent alumni to use their education to make a significant positive impact on society.
