The Global Health Certificate recognizes knowledge and understanding of research methods, research ethics, and emerging issues in global health. In addition, students explore a global health topic of their choice through an in-depth independent capstone project.

All qualifying juniors or seniors who have either fulfilled the requirements of the certificate or who have plans to complete the requirements prior to graduation (including approved and/or funded research/ internship experiences) are eligible. 

Objectives of the Certificate Program

  • To provide undergraduate students with the opportunity to develop analytic and problem-solving skills in key competency areas of global health including: current and emerging issues in global health, research ethics, research methods.
  • To instruct students in the fundamental principles of research, ethics, policy, planning and health care delivery science in resource-limited settings.
  • To allow students to concentrate on a specific global health challenge or issue either through experiential learning (internship) or through an independent capstone project.
  • To prepare students for further study in global health or internationally-focused careers in academia, civil society, industry, government or health care.
  • To compliment curricular developments in Global Health at Dartmouth.

The certificate requires successful completion of two required and two elective courses in global health as well as the completion of a capstone experience or project which can include a global health related internship, qualifying lab work or an independent research project.

Required Courses

One course from the "topics, concepts and issues in global health" group:

  • Global Health and Society (Geography 02) 
  • Anthropology of International Health (Anthropology 55)
  • Global Health Systems (Sociology 68)
  • Emerging Infectious Diseases: How Microbes Rule the World (Biological Sciences 11) (only offered 12S)
  • Global Environmental Health (Environmental Studies Program 28)
  • The Geographies of Health and Disease (Geography 56)

AND

One course from the "research methods and ethics" group:

  • Essentials of Global Health Research (International Studies 87.1) (not currently offered)
  • Introduction to Research Methods in Medical Anthropology (Anthropology 56)
  • Ethical Conduct of Research (Pharmacology & Toxicology 124)
  • Research Methods Course: Government 10, Economics 10, Mathematics 10, Psychology 10, Social Sciences 10 or Sociology 10

*Requests for substitutions of the required courses must be approved by the Certificate Advisory Committee.

**Students enrolled in the Global Health Minor offered through the department of Anthropology are eligible for the Certificate with the requirements of one of the required courses listed above (or substitute by petition) and the completion of the capstone project described in detail below.

Electives

Students are allowed to choose two elective courses from a pre-selected list of available courses with a primary global health emphasis. Elective courses provide students with opportunities to hone core competencies within an area of interest. Students may petition the Certificate Advisory Committee for approval of courses to meet the elective requirement that have not been pre-approved by the committee.

Capstone

The Dickey Center emphasizes the importance of experiential learning through internships, mentored-research experiences and independent research projects. The purpose of the capstone project is to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate and practice core competencies in global health. The capstone experience can take place either on or off campus and does not require international travel or funding. Capstone experiences can include, but are not limited to, global-health related internships, research and lab-work.

Credit for the capstone experience can be obtained through any of the following mechanisms: 5-7 page paper linking internships or research to specific global health issues or themes, research paper/ thesis, multi-media presentation, published article, presentation at global learning conference or poster presentation during senior week.
