Women’s and Gender Studies.
Sankalp, India

Cordelia is a Women's and Gender Studies major with a concentration on Women in the Third World. She will be working with an organization called "Sankalp India" in Jaipur, India in the fall. The organization is active in the socioeconomic and cultural development for the marginalized group in society: children and women. One of the main programs Sankalp India focuses on is the empowerment of women and girls in the community. This project is to enhance the self-development of the women on an individual and group level. Due to the patriarchal system in India, women regardless of caste, creed or clan face blatant discrimination and are forced to live their lives behind closed doors. To address the growing gap of literacy rates between the males and females, Sankalp India has a night school program for women and girls in the community. The role of the women’s empowerment project is to impart knowledge to women in order to build self-confidence and make an impact in their lives. Cordelia's role will involve teaching the women basic Math, English and IT skills. Her job entails developing a curriculum involving basic Math, English and IT skills. This curriculum will provide the adolescent girls and adult women vital assets for their advancement in their society.
