ILLU Greenland
Internship

The ILLU Science and Art Hub, established collaboratively between the University of Bergen, the ClimateNarratives project, as well as Avannaata Kommunia, is a place of convening. The space fosters innovation, intenuity, creativity, and collaboration through community outreach, workshops, seminars, and events. Art, design, technology, and science are brought together to generate ideas and come up with solutions to local challenges.

ILLU also has an open-door policy for the public, especially youth, inviting participation. It persists as a living testament to the value of locally-focussed, place-based, community-led efforts in collaboration.

The Institute of Arctic Studies has partnered with the University of Bergen to bring students to ILLU. Students will connect with rotating in-resident scientists and artists from the ClimateNarratives project and other collaborators to assist with planning, organizing, and setting up activities and workshops in ILLU. Students will be supported to focus on areas that align with their studies or ambitions, within a framework that supports the local community, and is respectful of Indigenous Local and Ancestral Knowledge and ways of being.

This unique opportunity is available from the Spring through Fall terms.

Details & Requirements

LOCATION: Illulisat, Greenland

DURATION: 8-10 weeks

FUNDING: The standard award given for internships requiring travel is up to $5,500.

ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for funding, you must have an “L term” (Leave Term) status with the College.

HOUSING NOTE: Our University of Bergen partners have generously offered housing space at ILLU for students. There are expectations that visitors will contribute toward the cleanliness of the space and adhere to the Ethical Guidelines.

Budget

Standard funding available for travel-based internships is $5,500. If expenses are higher than the standard award amount please specify and articulate where additional funds are needed. Consideration will be given on a case-by-case basis. Please provide detail in the budget outline.

Supervisor Statement

Applicants must ask their host organizations to complete the Supervisor Statement, which verifies your offer of internship and includes a description of the work to be completed.

Recommendation(s)

One recommendation must come from a Dartmouth faculty member

A second recommendation is suggested, but not required. Secondary recommendations can come from previous employers, advisors, staff, or an additional faculty member.

Writing Sample

This should be a research paper, opinion piece, newsletter article, narrative paper, blog post or creative essay that demonstrates your writing/research skills. Sample should be 1-3 pages in length.
