Congratulations to Tess Bruett ’27 on being named a 2025-26 Hanlon Scholar! The Hanlon Scholars Program, named in honor of President Philip J. Hanlon ’77, supports undergraduates who demonstrate resourcefulness, creative thinking, and academic excellence in addressing global challenges.
Tess will be co-advised by Dr. Melody Brown Burkins, Director of the Institute of Arctic Studies (IAS), and Professor Bruce Duthu, Chair of the Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) department. Tess’ research will investigate the evolution of Inuit legal systems in support of Arctic Indigenous Peoples’ rights of self-determination in Greenland, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, over the last fifty years.
An active student with the Institute of Arctic Studies, Tess participated in the inaugural “Arctic Sustainable Transitions” immersion trip to Iceland in Spring 2024, co-organized by IAS with Dartmouth’s Office of Sustainability. She is also an active IAS Arctic Innovation Scholar and will be studying Arctic history this fall during her study abroad in London.
