Institute of Arctic Studies (IAS) Innovation Fellow Dr. Matthew Druckenmiller, President of the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC), joined Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and international polar science leaders in Arendal, Norway, yesterday to announce the International Coordination Office for the Fifth International Polar Year (IPY-5), to be held in 2032–33.
“IPY-5 will be a once-in-a-generation opportunity to advance international polar research, collaboration, and action,” said IAS Director Melody Brown Burkins. “Matt’s leadership continues Dartmouth’s history of contributing to this global effort from its earliest stages.”

In his remarks, Druckenmiller expressed his hope for the new IPY-5 Coordination Office: “What motivates me most is the chance to build on years of collaboration with Indigenous Peoples and Arctic communities and bring them into IPY-5 as full partners from the beginning. This coordination office gives us a foundation to advance science that is grounded in genuine partnership as we navigate rapid change together.”
