In the summer of 2011, Eli Burakian .00 and Julia Burakian .01 embarked on a project to map and photograph the Himnakan Janapar, or backbone trail, through the region known as Nagorno-Karabakh, is a self-proclaimed autonomous region which lies between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Although internationally recognized as a part of Azerbaijan, the region is populated almost exclusively by people of Armenian descent, and was the location of a vicious war between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh on one side, and Azerbaijan on the other. The Burakians. photographs examine the landscape and people of this region. Julia lived and taught in Armenia with the help of a two-year Dickey Center Lombard Fellowship after graduation. She and Eli continue to visit the region to explore and photograph the area.s amazing landscape, people, and churches (many of which are over 1,000 years old).
