America and Iraq: Past, Present and Future

A discussion with Phil Klay, Steven Simon and William Wohlforth

October 24  |   3:30-5:00pm

Rockefeller Hall, Room 001

Sponsored by the Dickey Center’s War and Peace Studies Fellows Program

With the American military again involved in combat operations in Iraq, Americans are once again struggling to define the terms of our long and troubled relationship with Iraq.  What are American interests in Iraq today?  What does America owe to the people of Iraq after nearly 20 years of conflict?  Do we have the tools to make a positive difference in Iraq?

Please join us for a discussion of these important questions with Phil Klay, Steven Simon and William Wohlforth.  Phil Klay ‘05 is a graduate of Dartmouth College and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.  He served in Iraq’s Anbar Province from January 2007 to February 2008 as a Public Affairs Officer.  Klay is the author of Redeployment, a book of short stories about the war in Iraq, which George Packer of the New Yorker has called “The best literary work thus far written by a veteran of America’s recent wars.”  Steven Simon is the former White House Senior Director for the Middle East and Visiting Lecturer in Government.  William Wohlforth is Daniel Webster Professor of Government, Dartmouth College and one of America’s leading experts on American foreign policy.  The panel will be moderated by Professor Benjamin Valentino.
