Ilona Mettiäinen works as a researcher at the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, Finland. In the winter of 2017, she was a Visiting Arctic Fellow at the Institute of Arctic Studies at Dartmouth College. In her PhD research in Sociology, Mettiäinen studies strategic adaptation to climate change, particularly the use and co-production of knowledge for planned, proactive responses to climate change on the subnational level. Her other fields of expertise include Arctic human geography, sustainable Arctic tourism, and collaborative planning methods. Lately she has been working with visualization of science and science communications.

“Nanoq – Imag(in)ing climate change” is Ilona Mettiäinen’s first solo exhibition. The traveling science communication exhibition has been invited to seven venues in 2016-2017 in Finland and in the US. Mettiäinen uses photographs she has taken in different parts of the Arctic in teaching as well as in her scientific presentations and publications.

Please join us for a reception before and after the talk in the Russo Gallery, Haldeman Center. Reception starts at 4pm, followed by the gallery talk at 4:30pm. All are welcome.
