Diversity and Inclusion in the Military: A Conversation with Professor Jay Lyall, Brad Carney '20, and Karla Rosas '20

Wednesday, November 11  |  5:15pm EST  |  via Zoom

Jason Lyall is the inaugural James Wright Associate Professor of Transnational Studies. He also directs the Political Violence FieldLab at the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding. His research examines the effects and effectiveness of political violence in civil and conventional wars. His current projects include: (1) the relationship between inequality and violence; (2) assessing the effectiveness of aid programs in conflict settings; and (3) civilian casualties and the dynamics of blame attribution in civil wars. His recent book is: Divided Armies: Inequality and Battlefield Performance in Modern War, published by Princeton University Press.

Brad Carney served in the 82nd Airborne Division as a Forward Observer and deployed to Iraq. Later in his career, he passed Ranger Assessment and Selection to join the 3rd Ranger Battalion. He credits his time as an Army Ranger as the principal reason he attended an institution like Dartmouth College. At Dartmouth, Brad is majoring in Philosophy and will finish his Bachelors in March. Brad is starting law school in the fall of 2021 and serves as an LSAT tutor for under-represented groups in law. Brad is an avid beach volleyball player, reader, and aspiring British Baking show contestant.

Karla Rosas served in the United States Air Force for five years as a Security Forces member.  During her time in active duty, she was stationed at RAF Mildenhall in England, Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, and later deployed to Afghanistan and Djibouti before leaving active duty and joining the Air Force Reserves in Washington D.C. After leaving the Reserves, Karla was awarded the Posse Foundation Veterans Scholarship to attend Dartmouth, where she majored in Government and Middle Eastern Studies, graduating in 2020. In 2019, with the help of the Stamps Foundation, Karla co-founded The Servicewomxn Collective. Since her time in the military, she has remained close to the veteran community and volunteers at local VA hospitals. Karla is currently a Senior Associate at Quadrant Strategies in Washington D.C.
