Below are some of the most frequently asked questions received during the U.S. Foreign Policy and International Security Post-doctoral Fellowship application process. If you have additional questions, please contact Tom Candon.
When will the 2021-2022 Academic Year call for applications open?
We are now accepting applications. The deadline is December 31, 2020. You must apply through interfolio.
Who is eligible for the fellowships?
Applicants from all disciplines working on research that bears directly on U.S. foreign policy, international security, and international history are welcome to apply. While scholars at all stages of their careers will be considered, applications from recent recipients of a PhD or equivalent degree are especially welcomed.
What is the length of the fellowship?
Fellows are selected to spend ten months (September 1 - June 30) in-residence at Dartmouth on research and writing about international issues related to one of the Dickey Center's research areas: environment, health, human development, gender, and security.
Can I submit more than one writing sample?
Please send us what you feel is your best work, keeping your submission to 50 pages.
Can I submit more than two letters of recommendation?
Yes, you can submit up to three letters for consideration.
What is the financial statement?
The financial statement is for those applicants who have jobs and would be on sabbatical, or who have external fellowship funding. Please state on a separate document any funding you expect for the academic year.
Fellows receive competitive stipends, research support and benefits, comparable to those offered by other fellowship programs. Faculty on leave from their home institutions will receive half of their annual salary, up to $50,000.
Will I have to pay for a membership to apply through interfolio?
No, as long as you apply through the direct link on our website and in our promotional material, there is no cost to apply.
How do I confirm that my letters of recommendation are in?

What are the residency expectations?
This is a residential fellowship, we expect fellows to reside in the Hanover area, at a minimum, September 1 through June 30 and to keep their primary office at the Dickey Center so that they can participate fully and become part of the Dartmouth community.
When will I hear back about my application?
Our review committee will meet soon after the due date for applications. The review process generally takes up to a month. We expect to contact you with the results within 45 days of the due date.
When is the application deadline?
Applications are accepted through interfolio and must be received on or before Thursday, December 31, 2020. The Selection committee meets within a week of the application deadline. Incomplete dossiers will not be reviewed.
