Wrapping up their fall semester, twelve of our War & Peace Fellows traveled to Brussels and The Hague to study security policy, human rights, and emerging technologies. In Brussels, they engaged with NATO representatives to examine current challenges in international security, and met with officials from the U.S. Embassy to discuss Belgian trade dynamics and bilateral security cooperation. They also met with members of the European Parliament to learn about EU priorities such as trade policy, relations with non-EU states, the implications of AI, and the ethical frameworks governing emerging technologies.
The trip continued to The Hague, where the fellows attended meetings on security concerns spanning Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, as well as changes in European defense spending. They were briefed by Europol representatives on cross-border police cooperation and engaged with international legal scholars on the evolution of international law and the protection of human rights. A visit to the Peace Palace enriched their understanding on the historical foundations of international jurisprudence. The trip concluded with a visit to the International Criminal Court, providing insights into the Court’s origins, mandate, and operational procedures.
