Former Dartmouth Professor Yusaku Horiuchi, Rosenwald alum Kelly Matush (now Assistant Professor at Florida State University), and co-author Ben Goldsmith have published new research in International Studies Quarterly examining whether presidential travel abroad affects public opinion at home. Their findings: the same diplomatic activity that improves a leader’s standing with foreign publics tends to erode approval domestically — a divergence with real implications for how leaders weigh the political costs and benefits of international engagement.
