Student Opportunities

The Institute of Arctic Studies at the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding offers several opportunities that engage students in Arctic Studies and the Environment.

For Dartmouth Undergraduates

All Dartmouth undergraduates who have an interest in Arctic Studies are encouraged to apply to the Stefansson Fellowship and/or our partnered internships. These opportunities are designed to allow students to engage in the Arctic. Due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, we will be supporting remote internships in place of travel-based opportunities. For Dartmouth Graduate Students

Through the National Science Foundation-funded Joint Science Education Project (JSEP), Dartmouth graduate students have an opportunity to teach and mentor multicultural groups of high school students during the JSEP field course in Greenland. A selected interdisciplinary cohort of 4-6 students will participate in a year-long fellowship that includes communication and outreach training on campus and participating in the field-based JSEP program in Greenland during summer 2021. The program will run in remote format if travel restrictions remain in place.

For U.S. High School Students

The Joint Science Education Project (JSEP) Program targets students who have a passion for learning, strong interest in science and openness to other cultures. JSEP accepts applications from high school students who hold a U.S. passport in their junior year (11th grade) at time of application, for participation during the summer between their junior and senior year. Learn more about JSEP.

For Undergraduate & Graduate Students

In partnership with UArctic, the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the Northern (Arctic) Federal University (NArFU), the Institute of Arctic Studies at Dartmouth will offer a 2022 UArctic Model Arctic Council (MAC) from March 20 to 26, 2022 in Arkhangelsk, Russia. The program is open to university students  interested in Arctic and circumpolar affairs; Indigenous Peoples' rights and policy issues; international relations; and diplomacy.
