Internship with Future Earth

Internship Opportunities

Future Earth works around the world to connect scholars, researchers, and innovators in support of a more sustainable planet.  With global, regional and national offices in 30+ counties, and with research projects spread across the world, and in every domain of sustainability science, we connect research to action through partnerships, programs, platforms, and new forms of outreach and engagement.

For Spring Term 2023, Future Earth is looking for 1-2 exceptional applicants to work on sustainability programs initiated by their hubs in Canada and the United States to advance global research collaboration and public communications. These include:

1. FUTURE EARTH 2023 SUSTAINABILITY RESEARCH AND INNOVATION CONGRESS INTERNSHIP

This remote internship will directly support Future Earth's coordination of the world's largest, transdisciplinary gathering dedicated to sustainability research and innovation, the Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress (SRI2023; visit sricongress.org). SRI is a collaboration between Future Earth and the Belmont Forum, which is rapidly emerging as the leading global platform for sustainability science and innovation. SRI2023 is hosted by SENACYT and the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research.

This position is remote for Spring Term, but includes a requirement of one-week of travel to after Spring Term to attend and support the SRI2023 Congress (June 26-30) in Panama City.  SRI2023 is expected to bring over 1500 participants from academia, civil society, business, and government, from more than 100 countries to advance sustainability transformations.

The ideal intern candidate should be well-organized and able to meet tight deadlines, with strong attention to detail. Experience with event management is desirable. The working language is English, though knowledge of Spanish is an asset (but not a requirement).

The candidate must also be able to manage remote work as well as one week travel to Panama City to attend the Congress in late June. Future Earth expects the intern to attend regular meetings with the staff during Spring Term and to be available for work in the US Mountain Time schedule.

This opportunity is for the Spring term only.

2. FUTURE EARTH COMMUNICATIONS INTERNSHIP

Future Earth is seeking someone with an interest in the intersection of sustainability and digital communications. Many of the Canada Hub's activities take place at this interface through the Sustainability in the Digital Age initiative. It is desirable that the candidate has experience in social media and/or event management. The working language is English, though knowledge of French is an asset.

Over the course of this remote internship, the intern will assist Future Earth interests in the US and Canada to synthesize information through topical literature reviews, review of government programs, and summarizing the work of potential partner organizations.

The intern will also contribute to event coordination, compiling participant biographies, drafting text for event announcements, and assisting with running virtual events. The intern is expected to assist in the development of a content calendar for social media campaigns, drafting posts, designing accompanying materials using Canva, and posting via their publishing platform, Sprout Social (training available) to increase engagement and awareness of Future Earth. A familiarity with best practices for posting to Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook is ideal. Knowledge of social media trends is a plus.

The internship is fully remote and for the Spring term. A position is also available for the Summer term. Future Earth expects the intern to attend staff meetings of the Canadian and US Hubs. The working schedule is US Eastern Time.

This page will be updated with any new opportunities as they come available.
