In a recent brief, “The Disappearing Aid Check: The Future of US–Israel Defense Support,” written for the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, Steven Simon, visiting professor in Middle East studies and a Fellow with the Davidson Institute, argues that Israel’s plan to phase out direct U.S. military aid would not reduce American support but instead channel it through defense contracts, joint weapons programs and military partnerships. The result would be “a defense relationship that is simultaneously deeper and less transparent,” Simon writes.
