Below are some activities and steps to consider as you map out your career in international affairs. Note: this isn’t necessarily linear — you can jump down the list for any given year and do whatever you find appealing — and there are usually no pre-requisites for steps along the way.

Join Great Issues Scholars!
This first year program is a unique opportunity to connect with faculty, visiting experts, alumni and fellow students around complex global issues.
Join World Outlook
This student-run international affairs journal publishes papers by students from Dartmouth and universities around the world in print and on its blog, and hosts a podcast. There are many opportunities to get involved.

Apply for a Dickey Center Build Your Own or Security-related Internship for Y1 Summer
International internships are a great way to enrich an aspect of your on-campus academic work. Each year, the Dickey Center funds an average of 75 international interns and research fellows in 35 countries.

YEAR 2
Join the War and Peace Fellows
The War & Peace Fellows Program brings together students from across disciplines to tackle complex issues related to international peace and security, and to learn about a wide range of career paths available in security fields. The program organizes visits by high-level policy makers and experts on war and peace.
Apply for Davis, Goldwater, Boren or Truman Scholarship
Dartmouth’s Fellowship Advisors are available to meet with applicants to discuss opportunities and give advice and feedback on application materials.
Consider Internships and Careers in the Intelligence Community
Intelligence community internships and jobs may require security clearances. This can be a lengthy process given the background checks involved. Consider applying to these positions much earlier than the term during which you would want them.

YEAR 3
Become a War & Peace Student Assistant
Each spring, War and Peace hires 1-2 rising Juniors or Seniors to serve as student assistants for the War and Peace Fellows program.

YEAR 4
Apply for a Dartmouth Post-Graduate Fellowship
Dartmouth postgraduate project fellowships provide support to graduating seniors and alums (within 5 years) who plan to undertake a substantial research project in the US or overseas during the next academic year.
Apply to Peace Corps
Peace Corps Volunteers put their purpose, passion, and skills to work in partnership with host communities in more than 60 countries.
Apply to Dickey Post-Bacc Positions
Each year, the Dickey Center hires two Fellows to work closely with senior leaders in the Dickey Center on specific projects, conduct research and analysis on key global and international issues, and serve as a primary resource for selected finance and administrative functions.
Apply for a Dickey Center Post-Graduate Fellowship
Post-grad Fellowships like the Lola and Lombard Fellowships support graduating seniors and first-year Dartmouth alumni, including the professional schools, in public service projects in the U.S. and globally.
