AI in International Security and Conflict

What happens to accountability in warfare when the machine picks the target?

The Dickey Center convened a panel at AI at 70: What Must Remain Human? Dartmouth’s conference marking seventy years since the 1956 Dartmouth Summer Research Project gave artificial intelligence its name.

Our board member Sasha Baker ’05, Head of National Security Policy at OpenAI and former Acting Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, joined James Patton Rogers of King’s College London’s Department of War Studies for a conversation moderated by Ambassador (ret.) Erica Barks Ruggles, our Obenshain Family Distinguished Visitor and Diplomat in Residence.

Their discussion moved from sensors and targeting to networked command of dispersed forces, before considering autonomous combat systems and the operations they enable and the countries that stand to gain.
