Earlier this week, the Great Issues Scholars were introduced to the critical topics of Security and Peace Building by Ambassador Erica Barks Ruggles, Obenshain Family Distinguished Visitor and Diplomat in Residence.
Ambassador Barks Ruggles drew on her extensive diplomatic career to provide a unique perspective. Her senior leadership experience including her tenure as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Rwanda from 2015 to 2018, and as the Deputy to the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
This timely discussion gave the Great Issues Scholars a deep dive into the kind of real-world challenges Ambassador Ruggles addresses in her International Studies Minor seminar Diplomacy in a Complex World: Meeting Challenges, Creating Opportunity, and Pushing for Peace. There, the focus is on how diplomacy is central to managing complex global issues, from climate change and emerging technologies to challenges to the rules-based international order.
The Great Issues Scholars program is a year-long series of interactive events for Dartmouth first year students, designed to enhance their understanding of the world and current international events. Scholars work and learn together, connecting with faculty, visiting experts, and fellow students on complex global issues like regional security, climate change, and international development.
