Christine Mittaz ’27 undertook a 10-week Stefansson Fellowship with the University Centre in Svalbard, through the Institute of Arctic Studies at the Dickey Center at Dartmouth.
As a Stefansson Fellow, Christine contributed to the “Catchment to Coast” project, investigating Arctic watershed responses to climate change. She dove deep into analyzing sediment cores, utilizing ArcGIS Pro to map locations, and designed a protocol for quantifying organic content.
Beyond the fascinating research, Christine embraced the unique Arctic environment, completing a polar bear safety course and taking the opportunity to appreciate the healthy Norwegian work-life balance. This hands-on experience in Svalbard not only honed her research skills but also fostered personal growth, as she navigated a new country independently. Christine’s time in the field profoundly impacted her academic and career path, demonstrating the power of real-world application in Earth Science.
