Empowering Women Through Job Training Programs: Spotlight on East Africa

DESCRIPTION –The eradication of poverty around the world requires the economic and social empowerment of women. However, as in many places, an array of greater challenges tend to face girls in East Africa as compared to their brothers. As such, many lower-income women who desire good jobs are not in a position to obtain them without job training and mentoring opportunities. The inspiring directors of three social-good organizations in East Africa will be talking with us about the very different approaches their organizations take to empower women within their respective countries

Panelists:

Rehmah Kasule is a Ugandan serial entrepreneur, a social innovator, and the Founder of CEDA International. Her project, Plus+Africa Linkubator focuses on creating employment pathways for young women (age 22-30) through mentoring, skills building, and links to opportunities.

Jamila Mayanja of Smart Girls Uganda will be focusing on her project, the “Girls with Tools Initiative”, a program that trains young women who dropped out of school in male-dominated trades, such as electrical work, carpentry, welding, and truck driving, while also providing mentorship and life skills training as part of the program.

Antoinette Uwimana, is the Rwanda Country Director for Women for Women International (a global NGO headed by Dartmouth alumnae, Laurie Adams, ‘89) which trains women in economic empowerment through crafts and trades, while also providing life skills training and mentoring.
