In 2023, President Beilock committed Dartmouth to facilitate conversations and build skills to bridge divides. We've been doing just that with a global perspective for over forty years at the Dickey Center, carrying on the legacy of President John Sloan Dickey.
Immediately after October 7, we worked with our colleagues in Middle East and Jewish Studies to convene two public forums that enabled the larger Dartmouth community to come together and process the events unfolding in the Middle East. This has since evolved into an ongoing series of events.
Over the decades, we've convened experts to discuss and explore the tensions in the Middle East and around the world. In collaboration with the Middle East Dialogue initiative, we continue to convene practitioners and academics to provide context and foster a deeper understanding.
Director Holt launched Dissent & Democracy to showcase voices of courage in the face of oppression of freedom of speech, bringing prominent dissidents to campus to engage with students and help them appreciate how integrity and conviction can make a difference for a nation – and for the individual.

Read MoreIn the winter of 2023, we collaborated with the Rockefeller Center, the Ethics Institute, and the Leslie Center on the Dartmouth Dialogue Video Project. A group of students were engaged to explore instructive ways to introduce first-year students to the mindset and skills necessary to engage in successful dialogue.
