Hiring: Great Issues Fellows

The John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth is hiring two one year Great Issues Fellows to work closely with senior leaders on specific projects, conduct research and analysis on key global and international issues, and serve as a primary resource for selected finance and administrative functions. 

You'll assist the Center in engaging across the Dartmouth community, strengthening an international perspective, hosting events, and working on programs that address current issues with engagement and problem-solving.  

Great Issues Fellow: Global Health and Pandemic Security  

Pandemic Origins & Consequences Project (30%)  

  • Collaborates with senior leaders on the year-long research and analysis process in support of the Pandemic Origins and Consequences project. Support Dickey-affiliated faculty member (Kendall Hoyt) in coordination with senior associate director (Dawn Carey) to conduct research on the origins of the pandemic, the consequences, and policy options to prepare for future pandemics by the United States and international community. Support outreach to the academic and policy community in coordination with the project director.  
  • Work on organizing and supporting meetings and workshops; participate in meetings and draft letters, emails and minutes targeted to audiences in advance and follow up.  
  • Meet with faculty, students, practitioners, and alumni; prepare documents for the Dickey Center in presenting the work.  
  • Supports the organization of meetings, including travel arrangements for participants. 
  • Provides logistical support, writes reports, drafts short reports on research findings.    
  • Organizes recruitment of speakers for Dickey, plans student information sessions, prepares ads and posters, as well as writes emails to raise awareness of the program. Acts as a primary point of contact for inquiries from students and alumni. 

Global Health Initiative (GHI) (55%)

  • Manage student-oriented programs in coordination with GHI senior associate director. 
  • Assist with creating the communications schedule, drafts email letters and notices to faculty and staff.  Prepares minutes, distributes information, acts as a single point of contact for the campaign.  

Dickey Center – Director's Special Projects (15%)  

  • Works with Director to support development of speaker series that highlights Great Issues and campus-based efforts to address key multidisciplinary challenges.   

General Responsibility:  Project Research, Management and Support 

  • Collaborates with senior leaders on a year-long research and analysis process in support of great issues linked with programming (e.g., pandemic consequences project, Initiative for Global Security (IGS), future of democracy). Support Dickey leadership and Dickey-affiliated faculty members to conduct research on key academic and policy-related issues. Support outreach to the academic and policy community.  
  • Work on organizing and supporting meetings and workshops. Drafts letters, emails, and minutes to a variety of audiences. Acts as rapporteur and notetaker.   
  • Meet with faculty, students and alumni and prepare documents for the Dickey Center in presenting the work.  
  • Support the organization of meetings and events, provides logistical support, including travel arrangements for participants and speakers. 
  • Organizes recruitment of speakers for Dickey, plans student information sessions, prepares ads and posters, and drafts emails to raise awareness of the program. Acts a primary point of contact for inquiries from students and alumni. 
  • Represents the Dickey Center in forums and meetings; provides meeting notes or minutes as needed. 
  • Works as a member of Dickey team that coordinates institutional events across the year, including Board meetings; supports high-level visitors, visiting practitioners, and visiting scholars; supports events hosted by Dickey Center across its student and Dartmouth-oriented activities throughout the year. 
  • Handles confidential, sensitive information, exercises excellent professional judgment and discretion, and interacts appropriately with Dartmouth constituencies including senior officers, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members.  
  • Participates in meetings, training programs, and events.   
  • This position may require periodic domestic and international travel.

Minimum Requirements 

  • Recent Dartmouth graduate. 
  • Bachelor's degree. 
  • Deep experience in the Dartmouth community.

  • Commitment to personal and departmental integrity, creativity, collaboration, and professionalism. 
  • Full working knowledge of Microsoft Suite. 
  • Occasional weekend and evening hours will be required to attend special events and programs (some travel may be required as well).

Great Issues Fellow: International Peace & Security  

Initiative for Global Security (60%)  

  • Provide support to the initiative to highlight Dartmouth's academic work in international security, connect to policy makers, and develop greater links to the peace and security community. 
  • Work with Senior Associate Director to design and manage events, including international relations seminars, meetings with post-docs, the War & Peace undergraduate fellows, and distinguished visitors; provide support to visiting scholars, practitioners and travel by students and faculty; participate in events. 
  • Assist with creating communications schedules, draft email letters and notices to faculty and staff.  Prepares minutes, distributes information, acts as a single point of contact for the initiative.  
  • Track participation metrics, provide analysis on progress of initiative goals and activities; analyze new topics for potential development in international security. 
  • Support design and execution of conferences and workshops, and schedules for distinguished visitors.  
  • Supports planning for War & Peace Fellows student trips (to Washington, DC in March and internationally in December). 
  • Supports development of a new undergraduate student fellowship focused on peace and security. 
  • Supports development and execution of the annual IGS DC Conference. 
  • Supports development of career network tools (e.g., utilizing web-based platforms and databases on internships and jobs in international peace and security). 
  • Supports development of alumni outreach programs through the Dartmouth Connect platform. 
  • Participate in Dickey Center activities.
