Ms. Shackelford's extensive experience as a career diplomat and her dedication to promoting human rights, conflict mitigation, and democratic processes make her a valuable addition to our academic community at a time when Dartmouth is focused on difficult discussions and brave spaces.
Elizabeth Shackelford will join the Dickey Center for International Understanding as a Magro Family Distinguished Fellow in International Affairs for the Spring 2024 term. Ms. Shackelford's extensive experience as a career diplomat and her dedication to promoting human rights, conflict mitigation, and democratic processes make her a valuable addition to our academic community at a time when we're focused on difficult discussions and brave spaces.
Elizabeth Shackelford served as a career diplomat in the U.S. State Department, with postings in Warsaw, Poland, South Sudan, Somalia, and Washington, D.C. Her outstanding work in South Sudan during the civil war earned her the prestigious Barbara Watson Award for Consular Excellence.
She gained international recognition for her principled resignation in protest of the State Department policies of the Trump administration, which sparked important discussions about diplomacy and governance. That led to her book, The Dissent Channel: American Diplomacy in a Dishonest Age, which chronicles the challenges facing US foreign policy in the modern world.
During her time at Dartmouth, Mrs. Shackelford will be actively involved in both teaching and engaging with the campus community, including a public lecture, and will be open for meetings with students, faculty and our community.
She will teach INTS15, "Violence & Security," a multidisciplinary introduction to scholarship on the causes, consequences, and possible prevention of armed violence between groups. The course is part of the International Studies minor. We are sure that Ms. Shackelford's expertise and personal experience will enrich the learning experience for students taking INTS15 this semester.
A part of the Dickey Center's mission is to provide students with access to world class practitioners who can share both career advice and insights from experience in their field. We're honored to have Ms. Shackelford join us; we are confident that her presence will inspire and challenge not just our students but all of us to engage more deeply with global issues and perspectives.
