The Dickey Center joined the Jewish Studies and Middle Eastern Studies programs in holding two packed public events discussing the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Participating in the discussions were Jewish Studies Program Chair Professor Susannah Heschel, Middle Eastern Studies Senior Lecturer Ezzedine Fishere, Middle Eastern Studies Professor Jonathan Smolin and Visiting Professor of Government Bernard Avishai.
The forum was an opportunity for the Dartmouth community to learn from experts in the field who have been studying and teaching courses on Israel and the Middle East for many years. In addition to hearing observations and analysis from the participating faculty, the intention was to provide a brave space for students, faculty, staff, and community members to raise their questions, to be treated with respect, and let everyone know they had been heard.
For additional details and background on the discussions, please see the Dartmouth News story and Kent Friel's follow-up article in The Dartmouth student newspaper.
The events were led by the Jewish Studies and Middle East Studies programs and co-sponsored by the Dickey Center, the Office of the President, Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity, Dean of the College, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Ethics Institute, Government Department, Hillel at Dartmouth, Leslie Center for the Humanities, and the Tucker Center.
