The first annual Dartmouth International Vaccine Conference held at Dartmouth College in December 2023 covered important advances in research and development of global health vaccines. The theme of "turning vaccines into vaccinations" spotlighted critical issues in vaccine acceptance and vaccine access. The conference highlighted Dartmouth contributions to the field and discussed the role of academic vaccine institutes.
Speakers included leading national and international experts from academia, foundations, industry, and government. Conference presentations ranged from basic science research, to clinical trials, to technological developments, to the roles of industry, academia, and non-governmental organizations. Presentations covered a wide range of vaccine research for COVID-19, HIV, herpes simplex virus, measles, RSV, and tuberculosis. The conference program is available here and video recordings of the presentations are available here.
A wider planning committee (Dartmouth International Vaccine Initiative, DIVI) is proposing a major interdisciplinary vaccine institute for Dartmouth joining faculty from Geisel, Thayer, Tuck, and the College. The conference has helped promote the proposal by highlighting the importance of vaccine research across campus and at Dartmouth Health.
The conference sponsors included the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation and the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth, as well as Geisel's Center for Health Equity, Geisel's Department of Microbiology & Immunology, Tuck's Center for Healthcare, and Dartmouth Health Children's Department of Pediatrics.
