Alwaleed Abdeen of Sudan was a member of Dartmouth's cohort of Mandela Washington Fellows of the State Department's Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) in the summer of 2017. He died last week after having been held in horrific conditions for six months by the Rapid Support Forces in a detention center south of Khartoum.
Alwaleed was an accomplished engineer and entrepreneur. Before joining us at Dartmouth, he was an Ashoka Changemaker Scholar and Alumni of both the Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Program and YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa, Civic Leadership Track.
Alwaleed was a friend to all and represented the best of the Mandela Washington Fellowship program. He is deeply missed. We have lost a great man.
