The Dickey Center Postgraduate Fellowship in International Affairs is a unique opportunity for Dartmouth graduating seniors to explore further the complex landscape of global affairs outside the classroom. This Fellowship is designed to empower recent graduates to undertake internships, supervised research, or career-oriented work projects that are not highly compensated, and to explore areas where work experience is necessary for engagement in that field. The Fellowship should afford a recent graduate the experience of focusing on international issues and could include public service, journalism, civilc and other non-government organizations, or another such enterprise that tries to have a positive impact on critical issues facing communities and nations worldwide.
The primary objective of the Fellowship is to provide recent graduates with the resources and support necessary to develop hands-on experiences related to international affairs. The Fellowship aims to offer recent graduates a bridge between their Dartmouth experience and a future academic or professional step, allowing them to gain valuable work experience, explore options and develop practical skills, knowledge, and perspective needed for a future role in address pressing global challenges and make meaningful contributions in their respective fields. Many roles in international affairs require recent college graduates to start in low or unpaid positions to garner the experience that qualifies them for employment or higher remuneration. That time and cost can be a hurdle that rules out some students from trying work in areas that are financially risky, off a well-known career path, and not well-compensated. This Fellowship aims to help "derisk" at least one experience by providing support and guidance for recent graduates who wish to try a position that may affect their career choices.
Fellowships may span a duration of three to six months, allowing fellows to engage deeply with their chosen projects or internships. Opportunities may be based within the United States or international, offering flexibility for Fellows to explore diverse cultural and geopolitical contexts. Fellows will have the freedom to pursue a wide range of topics within the field of international affairs. They are encouraged to address specific global issues that impact individuals and states worldwide. These may include, but are not limited to:
The standard grant amount is $20,000 to support the 3-6 month-long Fellowship. This financial support is intended to cover expenses related to travel, accommodations, food, research materials, and other associated costs. In addition to financial support, fellows will have access to 24/7 emergency support (for medical and non-medical needs) through International SOS.
Prospective Fellows will be required to submit a comprehensive application detailing their proposed project or internship here.
Applications will be evaluated by Dickey Center staff based on the clarity of purpose, feasibility of the project, and potential impact. Awards will be offered to two Dartmouth graduating seniors.
Deadline for application is May 28 at 11:59PM.
