Navigating Arctic Resources: Preservation versus Exploitation
Justin Strauss, Assistant Professor of Earth Sciences, Dartmouth College
Monday, May 6, 2019 | 4:30pm | 041 Haldeman Center | Dartmouth College, free and open to all.
The circum-Arctic region remains one of the last unexploited wilderness areas on our planet. Despite tantalizing estimates of vast economic resources, scientists still lack consensus on some of the most fundamental aspects of the Arctic's geological evolution. As a result, this region has become an exploration frontier that will not only become more accessible with climate change, but also more economically viable as resources dwindle in other parts of the world. How do we intend to balance the continuous pressure for global economic growth versus the preservation of this unique wilderness? How will the Arctic’s rapidly changing climate affect this decision? This talk will attempt to set the framework for past and future exploration of the Arctic in order to motivate arguably one of the most important resource-based issues of our generation.
Sponsored by the Institute of Arctic Studies at the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding.
