Thirteen War and Peace Fellows traveled to Japan and Korea to study geopolitical, security, and economic issues in the region. In Tokyo, they learned about Japan's diplomacy and defense from members of Japan's Self Defense Force and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and met with journalists and NGO representatives. The group engaged in cultural experiences as well: with Dartmouth alum and Dickey Center Board of Visitors member Ryan Goldstein '93 hosting, they watched wrestlers practice at a sumo stable outside of Tokyo, dined with faculty and students from Waseda University, and visited other culturally significant sites. The trip also included meetings at the U.S. Embassy, the National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS), and the Toda Peace Institute. The Fellows enjoyed a final dinner in Tokyo with Dartmouth alums Ryan Goldstein '93 and Mark Davidson '82, and former Dickey Center Rosenwald Fellow Katsuya Tsukamoto (who hosted the group at NIDS earlier in the day).
The Japan leg of the trip concluded with a very moving trip to Hiroshima, where students spoke with A-bomb survivors and legacy successors at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and visited the Peace Memorial Park.
